There are many things in the world that many people take for granted. Things that happen behind the scenes that people never consider - that is until it stops working. Electricity and television are two such things that people have grown accustomed to but perhaps the one that people often forget is plumbing. No one thinks about where the water comes from or where it goes. The only time we really think about it when the drain is backed up or when some strange smell comes wafting from the plumbing.
Frisco is like any other town or city in the world that is reliant on plumbing to survive in the world today.
Plumbing, like the wheel, is one of the oldest inventions of mankind and has been around for literally centuries. The first people to consider plumbing of any sort were the Romans, the Persians, the Indians and the Chinese. They discovered ways to transport water from the often distant places in their kingdoms or nations to their cities as well as ways to get the waste water and products out of their cities. They were limited in what they could do and had to rely on gravity to make the water move from one place to another. Another mistake that the Romans made was to make pipes from lead. This toxic material poisoned the water and caused many people to become sick before they discovered that the problem lay with the pipes of their plumbing. Frisco, thankfully, uses the more modern methods of plumbing and lead is certainly not part of the plan to get water to the town.
Plumbing should not be confused with the sewer system that every city has though the two systems are closely linked. Plumbing refers only to the systems of pipes inside a house that takes water into the house and transports waste products out of the house and into the sewer system. The sewer system refers to the system underneath the city that deals with this waste and transports it to the places where it can be treated or disposed of. That being said, plumbers only work on pipes in houses or building and never - or at least rarely - work on sewers. The municipality is has to keep the sewers in working order even though people may consider it a problem with the plumbing. Frisco is not as large as a city like New York, but a problem with the plumbing can still be a big pain that needs fixing.
While the ancients may have made a few mistakes like using lead to transport their water, their idea behind plumbing was sound. Much of modern society would not be able to work without plumbing. Frisco would have as much trouble functioning as New York though the larger city might have a slightly large problem a lot sooner than the small town. The next time you flush the toilet, open the tap or wash the dishes consider the complex system of pipes and such behind the walls that bring the water to you. Consider also the men and women who keep these things going - the plumbers.
